Australia’s Largest Esports Tournament will be held at the Australian Open
Tennis Australia with Epic and ESL Australia are hosting the Fortnite Summer Slam at the Australian Open later this month with $500,000 in prize money. As such, this is the largest prize pool ever in the Australian esports scene eclipsing that of IEM Sydney.
Registrations are now closed, however, on Saturday 26th January, 500 of the best Fortnite players in Australia will compete for a shot at a share of $420,000 with the first placed winner receiving $100,000. There will be five heats where the top twenty will earn a place in the final to be held on Sunday January 27th.
There will also be an Charity Duos tournament with $80,000 going to the winners choice of charity.
It’s great to see not only a publisher get directly involved with competitive gaming in Australia but also support from a major sporting body such as Tennis Australia at a Grand Slam event on the global tour. This follows on the back of the AFL supporting last year’s League of Origins, the A-League’s E-League and of course professional sporting clubs investing in esports locally.
I really like the tournament format being totally inclusive and allowing access for all Fortnite players to compete in the event rather than giving out seeds to ‘pro’ players – of which there is no actual qualifying factor currently. There is a little bit of randomness with Fortnite that could truly flip everything on its head. My hope is that we see a sixteen year old with no profile take out the event and set them on a career path that the rest of the country can get behind.
On the other side of the coin, we could also see validation of the investment numerous organisations are putting into players locally and set them up for international appearances which is something that is severely lacking.
